Never Heard That Name

One Sunday afternoon my friend and soul winner, Charles Jeffries and I were ministering in the Jackson County Jail in Altus, Oklahoma. We were in E Pod witnessing through the bean hole in the door of each cell. As we were talking about Jesus one young man named Brandon told Charles and me that he had never heard the story about Jesus. In all my years of jail and prison ministry I had never heard that testimony before. As we told him the story, he believed with child-like faith as we led him through the sinner’s prayer.

About three months later, as we witnessed to a young man in jail named Josh, he also said that he had never heard the story of Jesus. Josh also prayed to receive Christ. It occurred to Charles and me that there are many in a generation of young people who have not heard of Jesus. Could it be true that in this age of internet technology, radio, television and mass communications that people don’t know about the Christ, the son of God? How could this be possible? Lets go back in time.

In the Bible in II Judges 2:8–15, God’s word says:

8) Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9) And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of mount Gaash. 10) After the whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what He had done for Israel. 11) Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. 12) They forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshipped various gods of the people around them. They provoked the Lord to anger 13) because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14) In His anger against Israel the Lord handed them over to raiders who plundered them. He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 15) Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them, just as He had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

There are many parents that are not telling their children about the one true God. Because the Bible is no longer being taught to their children, they are doing evil in the sight of the Lord. They are forsaking God and following other gods. They are provoking God to anger. The children in the U.S.A, our own flesh and blood, are being plundered because the hand of the Lord is against them. They are filling up our prisons because of ignorance and rebellion. They are heaping curses upon themselves, their families and future generations. They are in great distress. How long must this go on? What can I do about all of this? The bottom line is, "Now that I know this, what am I going to do about it?"

I have some great suggestions. First, we must believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, that He died on a cross and rose from the dead. We must repent of our sins and invite Jesus into our heart as our Lord and Savior. Secondly, we need to pray for our children and our nation asking God to have mercy on us. It is important to pray that God will bring about revival in our country and families. We should also pray that God will give us the boldness to share the gospel and that He will give us divine opportunities to witness to our family and others. We must cry out to God as the prophet did in Isaiah 6:8 when God asked Isaiah, "Whom Shall I send?" Isaiah replied, "Here Am I, Send Me!"

We have to be willing to tell people anywhere and everywhere about Jesus Christ, not only with our words but also by living a godly lifestyle. We may be the only thing standing between our nation and God’s judgment. We may be the only Jesus this lost and dying world will see. Are you praying for your family and your nation? Are you going to be the one that God sends? Are you going to make a difference in someone’s life this week? Tomorrow? How about today? Today is the day of salvation.
